Most professionals enter the world of residential family assessment because they want the very best for the children they support. It is rewarding work, but it is undeniably challenging. In the middle of the "craziness" of a never-ending to-do list, where the intensive assessment of parenting capacity often takes precedence, finding the headspace to make dedicated, thoughtful notes about the child’s individual experience can feel like an impossible task.

However, documentation isn't just a box-ticking exercise for Ofsted. It is a legal and moral duty to provide a record of a child's life. As they grow into adulthood, many children who have spent time in the care system look back at their records to make sense of their past. High-quality recording today provides them with the clarity and comfort they deserve tomorrow.

That’s why we’ve created a dedicated area specifically for the child, focusing on making it visually appealing and incredibly simple to use. Whether you are capturing a quick milestone or copying and pasting relevant parent feedback to ensure it’s recorded for the child too, this tool reinforces the fact that the child is never an afterthought.

Meeting the Standards

To provide truly outstanding care, centres must look beyond the assessment of the adult. Standard 2 of the National Minimum Standards (NMS) for Residential Family Centres explicitly requires that the "wishes and feelings" of children are listened to and taken into account.

This is reinforced by Regulation 10(2) of the Residential Family Centres Regulations 2002, which mandates that providers must:

treat the welfare of the child in that family as paramount.

This serves as an important reminder for good practice; while the parent is the subject of the assessment, the child’s safety, stability, and emotional journey are the absolute priority.

FamilyAxis addresses this by providing a dedicated Child Profile that creates a focused lens on the child’s unique journey. It provides the space to consider things from their voice and their perspective, ensuring their welfare remains front and centre, even within the context of a complex family assessment.

What You’ll Love About the Child Profile

Capturing Identity and Background (Standard 3)

Under NMS Standard 3, centres are tasked with promoting a child's positive identity and understanding of their background.

Our child profile tools allow you to record not just the basics, but the essential details of their life: sibling contact arrangements, cultural needs, and health flags that ensure they are safe and feel known.

Notes: Quick, Visual, and Easy

The Notes tool is designed for staff to quickly capture the "voice of the child" without adding to the administrative burden.

  • Ease of Use: If you’ve gathered feedback from a parent or an external professional, you can easily copy and paste that information here to ensure it’s retrieved and filed where it belongs.
  • Visual Recording: Use icons like a Heart for bonding or a Star for a milestone to make the record easily scannable and engaging.
  • Professional Integrity: Our AI-assisted editor ensures that entries are clear, professional, and age-appropriate, maintaining the high standards required for court-evidenced narratives.

The Life Story Timeline: Making Sense of the Past

By "starring" a note, you automatically curate it into the Life Story timeline. This creates a chronological, visual history of the child’s time at your centre. For a child, this isn't just data; it’s a memory.

Whether it’s their first words, a challenging experience they had to navigate, or a record of a milestone, these entries help bridge the gap between their past and their future identity.

Crucially, this timeline also collects vital information in the instance that a child is removed. By preserving these details, you help ease the transition and provide a new caregiver with the essential, personal knowledge they need to support the child from day one.

Tips for Impactful Life Story Work

  • Visual Scanning: Use different icons to make the feed easier to navigate: a Cake for birthdays, a Map for outings, or a Heart for significant bonding moments.
  • A Holistic View: Life story work isn't only about "happy" memories. It helps children make sense of their past. Record information factually and in a balanced way, focusing on the child’s experience.
  • Professional Standards: Notes should be honest, clear, and age-appropriate. Write with the child’s experience in mind. For babies consider what they are communicating with their eye contact, body language and verbal cues.
